Why the Dorper?
My husband, Rene, has always dreamed of owning a herd of nice quality Dorper sheep, so we decided to get that dream started in the right direction.
We started with a small herd of commercial, high-percentage Dorper ewes in 2015, having no more than 15 head. We culled over time and invested in our first Fullblood Dorper ram "Duzy", with Kaya, Powell, and Wilson bloodlines behind him. He gave us a gorgeous ewe crop and we continued to replace for quality. Through fate, we acquired a monster of a ram a year later, Powell Ranch 3269, a ram of exceptional quality and genetics. He was a bit old to take on but we believe he can still do the job. We now have a small but lovey herd of percentage Dorper, working towards purebreds. ,while also having picked up some very nice registered Fullblood ewes in 2017 from Von Netzer Ranch. We are dedicated to creating a small, but very exceptional herd of Dorper for commercial and breeding uses, as well as hitting a few shows and sales with our American Dorper registered stock. Dorper are a stout and strong breed developed in South Africa during the 1930's using the Black Persian and Dorset horn breeds. They are a meat and hair sheep, meaning they do not grow wool and are bred for meat production. They have a high quality carcass, and can thrive in semi-arid environments with very little rainfall. They are very easy to work with and maintain in a fenced area. They don't look to escape or get into trouble as goats do. Naturally parasite resistant with proper management and rotational grazing, you will find that these sheep maintain weight and growth in rough conditions. Adaptable, functional, and hardy, that is the Dorper! |
